(FACS)

6th Grade                7th Grade            8th Grade

FACS National Standards provide guidelines for developing programs that give students the opportunity to acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors for family life, work, and careers in sixteen areas of study.

At Belvidere Central our Encore class covers 4 areas in Family and Consumer Science over the three years.  Each grade level has its own course description and an outline of the material covered.  There is very little homework assigned for any of the grades. All supplies are listed.

 

 

Grade 6th  

Course Description: 
Students will be introduced to Interior Design and scaled drawings.  They will explore the careers that are related to these fields.  Student will learn how to draw a room to scale using blueprint markings for doors and windows.  Students will apply the scale drawing and elements of design as they create the Ideal Bedroom.  Students will demonstrate their individuality in selecting fabrics to personalize their rooms as they construct an accent pillow and locker caddy.
                       

Objectives:
Explain what a home provides. Analyze current living space to determine the purpose and function of that space. Measure their room and furnishings.  Demonstrate how to draw to ¼ inch = 1 foot scale using their measurements.  Construct a simple scale drawing for a given situation.  Identify techniques for washing, drying and ironing clothes. Demonstrate how to safely operate a sewing machine as they construct an accent pillow for their room and a locker caddy.

 SUPPLIES NEEDED

Students may order kits for both projects.  The kits are complete with material, thread and instructions.  The price of the kits are under $8.00.  Students will make their selection and a price will then be determined.

If Students and parents wish to shop for supplies, for the pillows:
1/2 yard of cotton fabric, thread to match and 1 large bag of fiberfill.  If they would like to make a larger pillow, for each 1/2 yard they will need at least 1 bag of fill.
For the
locker caddy:
1/3 yard of material, 1/3 yard of complementary material for pockets, thread to match and 1 foot of 1/2 inch Velcro.

Seventh Grade

Course Description
During this 9-week course we will focus on wellness.  The United States Department of Agriculture Team Nutrition has set goals to improve the health of children.  Students will investigate why making good choices now is important to achieving a healthy life. They will evaluate their diets and work on setting goals to achieve the goals of Team Nutrition.  Students will be introduced to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Students will work safely in the kitchen applying correct sanitation procedures as we follow recipes that meet our goals.  Students will learn about:  recipes as they prepare a variety of products, the lab equipment, correct table setting, proper manners, food label regulations, new technology in the food industry, careers in the food industry and eating disorders.

Objectives:
Explore careers in food production, marketing, distribution and preparation.  Explain the social, mental and physical aspects of wellness. Analysis ways in which health problems are related to eating choices. Communicate ways in which making decisions help us to reach goals for wellness. Identify the sources of food contamination.  Research articles on the internet on salmonella. Create an informational health brochure on the prevention of salmonella.  Explain how to handle food safely.  Identify cause of common kitchen accidents and ways to prevent them.  Examine the food labeling laws.  Apply the food labeling laws as they create a new product.  Explain how the microwave works and demonstrate how to use it.  Examine new technology used in preparation and distribution of foods.  Demonstrate ability to follow recipe directions accurately.  Understands the effect of cultural diversity on food choice.Suggested sites to visit with your child

Eighth Grade

Course Description:
Students will be exploring the world of work.  Students will begin by determining their values, skills, likes and dislikes.  They will explore the changing face of careers as we enter the new century.  They will determine what impact these changes have on their future.  Students will also look back over the past 5 decades and delve into what has impacted the work world and learn from those who worked during that time.  Students will investigate a career of interest and learn how to research that career.  They will write letters, research the internet, use available books from the library and then create a power point explaining what they will be doing in that career, how to prepare for the career and the future out look for their career.  During this time the class will establish a small business and operate the business to better understand entrepreneurship.

 Objectives:
Create short and long term goals from their personal assessment of interests, skills, values and aptitudes.  Extrapolate from career charts the importance of growth and change over the past 5 decades.  Read and reflex on daily quotes about the world of work.  Read articles from the internet about the future of work and determine how this could have an affect on their future.  Interview a person of their choice and write a summary of their work history.  Explain how basic skills-reading, writing, math, science, speaking, and listening-contribute to success at work.  Discuss why computer skills are essential in the workplace.  Discuss how to prepare for a job interview and make a good impression.  Prepare a resume for a position in the classrooms business.  Participate in a mock interview.  Establish and operate a small business using embroidery sewing machines.  Demonstrate actions of a responsible employee. Create a Power point on a career of choice.

Career Research Assignment
Create a power point.  You need to prepare at least 1 slide for each question below. (6 of the 8 questions need to be answered.)

     Explain what you will be doing when you achieve this career.  The nature of the job.

     What personal resources (skills, abilities, interests) do you need for this job?

     What basic life skill would you use in this career? 
         (Basic math, reading, writing, speaking, listening, team work, decision-making, planning, thinking critically and asking questions.)
4.
     How do you prepare for this career?  (High school diploma, Tech Prep, College, Apprenticeship, etc.)
5.
     What subjects in High School would help you prepare for this career?
6.
     Where would you work and under what conditions would you be working?
7.
     Will there be jobs in this career in the future?  Are there opportunities for advancement?
8.
    
What are your expected earnings for this career?
